Aeris

is a completely passive, wall mounted air filter that uses natural bamboo charcoal in a laminated wood veneer housing, along with naturally occurring air currents in the home to remove contaminants from the air without the use of fans, motors, or electricity.

Designed to blend in, aeris hangs in corridors, rooms, and spaces where air quality can get stale. While decorative, the active charcoal inside is always working to absorb particles and odors to keep air fresh.

Passive Purification

Ideally placed in high traffic areas, like hallways, and placed around shoulder height, air displaced by walking create currents that circulate air through a space. No power needed.

Infinitely Reusable

the active charcoal insert is removable allowing users to reactivate the carbon inside simply by placing it on the windowsill. The UV light from the sun cleans and reactivates the carbon within over the course of a few hours, making aeris a long-lasting home essential.

Dynamic Breathability

the slot pattern on the wood casing is designed to optimize airflow in and through aeris, and visually reflect the dynamic movement of the air.

Making Aeris

To bring aeris to life, I set out to build three units from scratch, to prove the concept, test and explore the boundaries of manufacturing, and get a feel for the materials in the most direct way possible.

Balancing craft, engineering, and manufacturing, I was able to simulate an initial production run at a small test scale to validate and address considerations for concept scale-up.

The process covered the full spectrum of execution from hand selection of materials, manufacturing jigs and moulds, laminating and forming wood veneer, CNC machining, hand finishing details, crafting soft goods and sourcing of carbon, as well as art directing the final concept photoshoot.

Creating aeris was a labour of love, a learning experience, and an opportunity to reinvigorate my love for craft.
